Governor Monday Okpebholo has announced a ₦50 million reward for Edo Queens FC, following their impressive victories in the 2025/26 Nigeria Women’s Football League and the 2026 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League.
The Governor made the announcement Tuesday night during the trophy presentation ceremony at Festival Hall, Government House, Benin.
The ₦50 million reward covers both players and officials of the victorious Edo Queens team.
Edo Queens secured the WAFU-B title after a tense 2-2 draw with Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies in regulation time.
The Nigerian side then triumphed 4-1 in the penalty shootout to lift the regional crown.
Okpebholo described the feat as significant for both Edo people and Nigeria, praising the players for their resilience and fighting spirit throughout the tournament.
“For me, this cup matters to Edo people, and it matters to the country. I must commend the players for their doggedness. I also want to thank the coaching crew and other officials,” he said.
The Governor singled out the team’s goalkeeper, for special praise, saying her composure and antics during the shootout convinced him Edo Queens would win.
“I was confident that the team would win the penalty shootout after observing the goalkeeper’s composure and strategy. Her movements and efforts to distract the Ghanaian penalty takers gave me confidence. Her saves were crucial to the team’s victory,” he stated.
Okpebholo also applauded the coach, technical crew and other officials for their role in the success.
He further commended Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS), for airing the match live, noting that the coverage allowed more Nigerians to witness and celebrate the achievement.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Edo Sports Commission, Amadin Enabulele has described the team’s double titles in one season was a huge accomplishment.
“Our girls have truly done us proud. To win the Nigeria Women’s Football League and the WAFU-B championship in the same season is no small feat. It requires grit, unity, discipline, resilience and an unshakeable belief in oneself,” he said.
Enabulele also lauded the new management for raising standards and the technical crew for carrying “the hopes and aspirations of Edo people on their shoulders.”
