Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has declared that Nigeria’s challenges stem not from its citizens but from its political leaders. He stressed that the country is rich in resources but suffers from poor governance and mismanagement of public funds.
Obi made the remarks on Sunday during a Thanksgiving Service marking the 50th anniversary of Oyo State at the Cathedral of St. Peter’s, Aremo, Ibadan. Addressing congregants, clerics, government officials, and political leaders, he urged Nigerians to pray for their leaders, admitting that politicians bear the greatest responsibility for the nation’s socio-economic woes.
“We are the problem of Nigeria. No other person. Nigeria is not a poor country but only poorly governed. Remember us in your prayers that God should touch our hearts to use public money for public good,” Obi said.
The former governor, who has become a prominent voice for reform and accountability, commended Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for what he described as people-focused leadership and visible development across the state. Obi noted that Ibadan remains a historic city of knowledge and hope, adding that even members of his entourage were impressed by the transformation under Makinde’s administration.
He revealed that he had been involved in advisory engagements during the early days of Makinde’s government, praising the governor’s commitment to service and results.
“I thank Governor Makinde for faithfully serving the people. As you celebrate this 50th anniversary, I pray that the next fifty years of the great state will be exemplary,” Obi said.
Obi reiterated that good governance is achievable in Nigeria if leaders prioritize the public interest over personal gain. He pointed to Oyo State as an example of what is possible when public resources are managed transparently and responsibly.
