Academic staff of Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa (SLUK), have rejected the Jigawa State Government’s latest offer on issues affecting the institution, insisting on a two-week warning strike from midnight on September 15, 2026, if their demands are not addressed.
The decision was reached by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), SLUK branch, at its 54th Regular Congress Meeting held on Tuesday.
The union said it was dissatisfied with the proposal presented by the state government during recent engagements over issues affecting the university and its academic staff.
According to a statement jointly signed by the ASUU-SLUK branch chairman, Idris Chiromawa, and Secretary, Salisu Yunusa, the congress resolved to proceed with the planned warning strike unless the government provides a satisfactory response to its demands.
It warned that failure by the government to address the issues after the warning strike could lead to a total and indefinite strike.
A major issue raised by the union is the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), alongside outstanding promotion arrears owed to eligible staff since 2024.
The union called for Sule Lamido University to be exempted from the payment platform, citing concerns over the system’s effectiveness in addressing the university’s payroll-related issues.
It also expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s position on the two per cent local government contribution to the university.
The union urged the government to provide a sustainable alternative source of funding for the other state-owned university.
The congress also considered a report on the recent ASUU Emergency National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Abuja.
It called on relevant stakeholders to intervene and encourage further discussions with the government to resolve the outstanding issues and prevent disruption of academic activities.
